AMSA has recently created the AMSA Wellbeing Network (working title), which is a group made up of representitives from each Med Soc. As I am the Sports and Recreation rep this year I am part of this new and exciting initiative by the guys at AMSA. This network will be used then be used to collaborate on wellbeing events, to share successful initiatives and to discuss some of the difficulties being faced in improving medical student wellbeing and awareness there of, amongst other things. It is our job to help the medical students through the med course with any issues arising, and we hope this network will build into a good and safe environment whereby all the med students feel they have a body that looks after their wellbeing.
The Wellbeing Network and AMSA have created a publication, Keeping Your Grass Greener: the wellbeing guide for medical students. The guide is the culmination of over 18 months of hard work by students from both AMSA and our friends across the ditch at the NZMSA. The book contains useful advice from experts in the field on a range of wellbeing topics such as stress management and financial planning. It also contains an extensive list of resource already available in the community that students could access at times of need. In addition there is a section dedicated to telling stories first hand of medical students and juniour doctors at times when their wellbeing has come under challenge - it really reminds us of how commonplace this can be and hopefully can bring these conversations out into the open some more.
